Gilles Dreyfus has graduated from Medical School at Paris University, France in 1978. During his medical training he worked in a number of hospitals in France including the Marie Lannelongue Hospital, the Foch Hospital and the Broussais Hospital, where he became Consultant in 1987. Gilles also went to Stanford for 6 months, under Professor Shumway, to train in heart transplantation.
He worked for nearly 10 years with Professor Alain Carpentier, (as staff surgeon) along with him he developed a heart transplantation and LVAD programme, as well as mitral valve repair expertise. Gilles became Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery in 1989 in Paris University. He moved from Broussais Hospital to Foch Hospital, in Paris, where he became Chief in 1995. He published new techniques for mitral valve repair (papillary muscle repositioning) and used extensively LVAD as bridge to transplantation.
Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub asked Gilles to join him in 2000 and he moved in 2001 as Consultant in the Department of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at The Royal Brompton Hospital and Harefield NHS Trust in London and became a Professor of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at Imperial College London School of Medicine (with a Chair). He was also Director of Transplantation and Director of Surgery for many years.
More recently, Professor Vincent Dor asked him to take over in 2010 at Monaco, at the Cardio-Thoracic Centre. He is currently Medical Director and his main clinical interests in adult cardiac surgery are valve repair mitral, tricuspid and aortic valve repair, surgery of the aortic arch and heart failure surgery with LVAD as destination therapy. The Centre got involved into minimally invasive mitral valve repair after the acquisition of a Robot Da Vinci Xi and cases are being performed on a regular basis.
He teaches in a course named Master of Valve Repair, regularly held in Monaco, since 2010 and is part of the Mitral Conclave held every other year in New York since the beginning and sits on the Program Committee. He has been serving as Board member of the Heart Valve Society which has held its third annual meeting in Monaco and he was serving as President of this Society.
Since November 2018, as Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Institut Mutualiste Montsouris, Paris, France, and since May 2022, as Professor of cardiac Surgery at Hopital Europeen Georges Pompidou, Paris, France, he performs mostly mitral valve repairs and HOCM surgery.
He also attends as speaker most of major International Meetings such as; AATS, EACTS, ESC, Mitral Conclave, ACC. He publishes on a regular basis in scientific journals such as The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and in The Journal of The American College of Cardiology. He is a member of ATTS, STS, EACTS, ESC.
He has some wide experience and interest in training surgeons in China, in India and Africa.
He built a cardiac center in Dakar, Senegal: the only active center in the sub Saharan region.
He has been awarded the credentials of Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and Chevalier de l’Ordre de St Charles.
