Short Biography


He has been Chancellor of the University of A Coruña since 2016. President of the Sectorial Commission of the Conference of Chancellors of Spanish Universities CRUE-Management. President of CIXUG. President of FEUGA. Professor of Microbiology. Married, two children. Graduated in Biological Sciences in 1978 and obtained his PhD in 1986 at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). In 1985 he began his teaching activity at the University College of A Coruña and in 1988 he obtained the post of Professor of Microbiology at the USC, teaching in the Faculties of Biology, Veterinary and Pharmacy. In 1991, he became Professor of Microbiology in the Faculty of Science at the University of A Coruña (UDC). At the same time as his teaching activity, he carried out research work on microalgae: mass production and use in aquaculture, physiological response to pollutantsn the environmen , heavy metals and pesticides, it, etc. He was principal researcher in 18 competitive projects and research contracts, at regional, national and international level, and also participated in 12 more. He is author of more than 85 research articles, 60 of them published in international reference journals, 5 books, 11 book chapters and he directed 8 doctoral theses. His research activity has been positively evaluated by the CNEAI without interruption since 1985. He currently has been recognised for 6 six-year research periods. In the University Management field he occupied different responsibilities: secretary of the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology of the USC, director of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology at the UDC, director of the Agency for the Quality of the Galician University System (ACSUG) (2005-2009). Vice-chancelor of Degrees, Quality and New Technologies at the UDC, from 2012 to 2015. He also carried out university quality evaluation activities, including: president of the commission of the Docentia Programme at the University of Extremadura, member and president of the commission for the evaluation of educational innovation projects at the University of Granada, president of the commission for the monitoring and certification of the Docentia Programme of ANECA and ACAP.
